Point Lookout is a hamlet in Hempstead in Nassau County. The hamlet is only 0.2 square miles found at the east end of a barrier island between the Atlantic Ocean and Reynolds Channel. Long before people started calling the area home it was mainly a large sandbar just off the coast of South Shore. William Reynolds had the channel dragged and then built the city of Long Island. The residents living there decided on the name Point Lookout. During the 1900’s, the community was mainly a summer haven with many of the streets still unpaved. During the 50’s, the summer homes were refurbished into permanent homes along with a few businesses.
Point Lookout is served by Long Beach School District with no schools directly in the hamlet. The beach is for residents only. The area is home to 2 Hempstead town marinas as well as 2 fishing stations that offers boat and fishing rental equipment.
The area is exclusive with only residents partaking of the beach and the family activities provided. The secluded atmosphere is the draw to the area with the majority of property being for homeowners and no rentals. The homes vary from colonial to cape to ranch which range in price from $550,000-$2.5 million.
